Different ways to
submit your website to the Search Engines
1. Free Submission Service. Free
Submission services offer to submit your website to as
many as 500 top Search Engines for free. This may sound
like a good deal, but in actual fact you may lose at the
end. Why? The answer is simple. Each Search Engine has a
different algorithm (specific requirements) for
determining page ranking. Free submission services submit
the same information to all Search Engines. Top ranking
in all the major Search Engines is not achievable with
free submission services.
2. Paid Submission Service. The only
advantage of paid submission service over the free
submission service is your website gets listed faster.
This does not necessary mean good ranking. As with free
submission services, paid inclusion submit the same
information to all Search Engines.
3. Do it yourself. Manually submit your
website to all the major Search Engines. This is a good
way to submit your website provided you know the specific
requirements of the individual Search Engines. This could
prove to be an intensive work coupled by the fact that
Search Engines do change their specific requirements, and
you have to keep up with these changes to know what will
work and what won't work.
4. Professional Search Engine consultant.
This service does not come cheap. But it may prove to be
effective. Search Engines consultants are specialists in
their field and they know the latest methodology to
secure a good page ranking. They would also evaluate your
web design, give advice on keywords to use, help create
content for Search Engine Optimisation.
5. Submission Software. There are some
softwares that guide you through keyword selection and
description, prepare individual submission form for each
Search Engine, and automatically submit your website to
the major Search Engines, indices and directories.
Submission to
Human Edited Directories
You have to prepare a 25 word or less description of your
website. The description should contain your keywords or
key phrases. Avoid marketing language and hype.
Yahoo
Submission to leading directories like Yahoo, DMOZ,
LookSmart, Zeal, GoGuides, Joe Ant and others has to be
done manually. These directories require you to choose a
catergory for your website listing. You cannot use
software to fully automate submission. Yahoo Directory
also uses human editors to review, approve and compile
submissions. For human edited submissions it could take
as long as three months for your website to be indexed.
Yahoo Directory offers two submission options,
Yahoo Standard which is free and Yahoo Directory Submit
which involves a submission fee. And of course, paid
submission ensures quick turnaround time, and your
website gets listed quicker if it is approved. Submission
to a non-commercial catergory using Yahoo Directory
Submit requires a one time payment of USD299. Anyone can
use Yahoo Standard to submit for free to a non-commercial
catergory. Take care that your website description is not
overtly commercial. Avoid marketing language. To be
listed in the commercial catergory the yearly fee is
USD299.
The Open Directory (DMOZ)
DMOZ
is the largest, most comprehensive human edited directory
of the Web. It is constructed, maintained by a vast
global community of volunteer editors. It is provided as
an option by major Search Engines including Google. So it
pays to be listed with the Open Directory.
Submission to DMOZ is free. But there is no guarantee
that your website will be listed. The submission process
is simple. Locate the catergory for your website listing,
and then use the add URL which is found at the top of the
catergory page. Fill out the form and submit.
Submission
to crawler-based Search Engines
Google
Google is a popular crawler-based Search Engine. It also
powers the the main search results of other Search
Engines.
- Build links
into your website. Crawlers follow links.
So if you have quality incoming links
(links from websites with high ranking),
chances are the crawlers will find and
list your web pages.
- Get your
website listed with one of the major
directories, eg. Yahoo. Google and other
crawler-based Search Engines will most
certainly find and list your web pages.
No additional work is needed to be listed
with crawler-based Search Engines.
- Through
Google add URL page. There's no
guarantee that your website will be
listed. You only need to submit your
top-level page. Don't submit the same
page repeatedly or you may be penalised
for spamming.
- Through paid
placement program.

Yahoo
Yahoo is another
popular crawler-based Search Engines and like Google, it
powers the main search results of other Search Engines.
As with Google, the best way to get listed is to build
good incoming links. Yahoo offers free URL submission. It also offers pay per click to
get your web pages listed quickly.
Teoma
Teoman powers the main results of Ask Jeeves website. In
fact, Teoma is owned by Ask Jeeves.
Teoman has no free Add URL page. However, being a
crawler-based Search Engine, it automatically crawls and
indexes your web pages. As it is with Google and Yahoo,
build good incoming links, and your chances of being
indexed and ranked highly are good.
MSN Search
This is another popular and well-used Search Engine. You
can submit your website for listing via its Add URL page.
