How To Choose Affiliate Programs

What is an
affiliate program? It is a program whereby the owner with
an established product or service enables you, the
affiliate to market his product or service for a
commission. Anyone who has a computer can have an online
affiliate business, fully operational in a matter of
minutes and in most cases free of charge.
Affiliate programs are a good way to make money online if
you do not have a product or service of your own to
market. Most affiliate programs offer affiliates free
websites in minutes. The free website is actually a
duplication of the product owner's website, with its own
uniquely coded URL. To make money from affiliate programs
you must already own a high traffic website. Or else how
are you going to drive traffic to the product owner's
website? The problem is most affiliates don't have an
existing high traffic website. Signing up for an
affiliate program is easy. Driving traffic to the product
owner's site using a uniquely coded URL is not easy.
There are literally thousands of affiliate programs
available on the web. Some pay a few cents for referring
a buyer whilst others pay high commissions for selling
high value products or services. Clickbank alone offers
thousands of affiliate programs. Often people lured by
the commissions signed up for multiple affiliate
programs. While theres no harm in doing that, a
better plan of action is to start with one or two
suitable affiliate programs and then adding more down the
line. Now the question is how to wade past the myriad of
choices available to find one or two suitable programs?
Here are 13 tips for choosing suitable affiliate
programs:
1. Targeted-traffic. What is your
targeted traffic? If your site caters to small home based
business, you would not sell high-end software or
services costing thousand of dollars.
2. Market products or services that are related
to your site. Visitors to your site love
content. Search Engines love content. A site with
information rich content sells. Site visitors would turn
to ready buyers if your site provides solutions to their
problems or needs, and if they could see the value of the
product or service you are marketing. Find affiliate
programs with products or services that are related to
your site.
3. Programs that have quality products or
services that are in demand. Don't promote a
product or service that undelivers. Your reputation is at
risk. There are a number of excellent tools on the
Internet to access information on product popularity and
viability. Affiliate Alerts is one excellent tool that
enables you to view product rankings in the Clickbank
marketplace. It also allows you to do a keyword search
for a particular product or product group. A free version
of Affiliate Alerts is available at http://affiliatesalert.com . The Keyword Selector is another
excellent keyword search tool that computes the number of
searches for a product or product type on the net over
the past month. It is available at http://searchmarketing.yahoo.com/rc/srch
4. Programs that have good support, information
and marketing tools and tips. Good company
support is one important factor for the new affiliate.
Check out the quality and response time of the company
support system. A quick quality response of 24 to 48
hours shows that the company is organized and efficient.
Perish the thought of signing up if you are still waiting
after 3 4 business days! It reflects poor customer
service. This is also a telling sign that your paycheck
may also be delayed.
A good company will offer you online information,
marketing tools and tips to assist you in your marketing
efforts. So thats no need for graphics design and
html programming. Your time should be wisely spent on
writing content for your site. Some affiliate programs
offer downloadable e-books free of charge for training
affiliates. You could also offer these free e-books as
freebies at your site.
5. Programs that offer reasonable pay. This
is of course relative. It depends on your definition of
reasonable pay. For beginners, an affiliate program that
is able to earn more than $300 a month is worth a shot.
Downloadable digital products often offer a higher
commission rate, in many cases 50 per cent, than physical
products. Often with physical products, your profit is
the difference between wholesale and retail price. Many
affiliate programs offer a two-tier compensation, where
you too can recruit affiliates, and earn income from
their efforts. These affiliate programs give you two
incomes from one source.
6. Programs that builds equity
for your business. It is a huge bonus if a
company pays you commission for present sale as well as
future sales by the same customer you refer. This builds
equity for your business.
7. Programs that limit the number of affiliates. This
is a rare find like searching for needle in a haystack.
If you do find one, grab it.
8. Company that has good sales copy and website that is
easy to navigate. You will be sending potential
buyers to the company's site. More
buyers means more commission.
9.Company that uses good tracking software. You
want to see your statistics in real time. It shows how
well your promotional effects are working. Compare the
results between a banner and a text link. Yes, you also
want to know how much commission you earn in real time.
10. Companys payout track record. Does the
company pay on time? Talk to another affiliate who
receives regular paychecks from marketing the
companys products. This is one important factor in
choosing an affiliate program. After all, for your
marketing efforts promoting the companys product or
products you expect a paycheck.
11. Check if the company allows spam, or spam
themselves. Don't put your reputation at risk.
12. The agreement clause. Read the affiliate
agreement carefully. Some companies will not allow you to
promote competitors' products on your site.
13. Cost. Whats the cost of signing up?
Many good quality affiliate programs are free. What about
affiliate programs that require money to be paid upfront.
Take this advice: Move on. Dont even think about
them. Why should you pay money to promote other
peoples products? However, some affiliate programs
do offer to market your site, and some even offer income
guarantees. It may be worthwhile to sign up for such
affiliate programs, but only after your research showed
that the business opportunity is legitimate.
These 13 tips are by no means exhaustive when it comes to
choosing suitable affiliate programs, but they should
help you to choose a program with a product or service
that sells with reasonable income potential.
There are a lot of scams on the Internet. Dont be
taken in by promises of making money fast or making money
with no effort, especially those affiliate programs that
require money to be paid upfront. Do your research before
taking the plunge. Do a Google Search on the prospective
company. Find out what other people are saying about the
company.
