Writing the
first sentence is the hardest part. So, you put off
writing projects or like most people, jettison the idea
of writing altogether.
How are you going to write an article that is 600 words
in length? That's why you need to break your writing
project down into smaller manageable tasks. It helps to
organize your thoughts. Once you organize your thoughts
your writing project gets underway. If you know the
steps, and master them, then writing could be easy, fun
and even rewarding.
Writing articles does not have to be a maddening,
hair-pulling experience.
Title
First, decide on your article working title. Write a few
different titles. You'll find that one that will grow on
you. Titles help you stay focused on your topic, it also
give your readers a general idea of your articles.
Aim for clarity in your titles, but cleverness always
helps to sell your content as long as it's not too sassy.
For example, Remedies for Hair Loss: The five effective
ways to a full crop of hair. Or: Quit Being a Potato
couch: fifteen exercise plans to whip you into shape.
Thesis
Your thesis is your main point, summed up in a concise
sentence. It lets the reader know where you are going,
and why. It's practically impossible to write a good
article without a clear thesis.
Place your thesis at the end of your introductory
paragraph. Readers anticipate and read closely your
thesis, and they want to find in one concise sentence the
point and purpose of your article.
Introduction
The introduction is a short paragraph of what problem you
are addressing and how your article is going solve it. It
should grab your readers' attention, set up the issue,
and lead them in to your thesis. Your introduction is a
buildup of the issue to be discussed at hand, a launch
pad to bring your readers into your article main body.
Body Text
The body forms the main bulk of your article. Break up
your article body into headings and sub-headings.
Each sub-heading should focus on a single idea that
supports your thesis. Begin paragraphs with topic
sentences, support assertions with evidence, and expound
your ideas in the clearest, most sensible way you can.
Conclusion
A good article is not just one that informs, but is
remembered by its readers. You want your readers to walk
about with something of value from your article. Conclude
your article with a quick wrap-up sentence. End with a
memorable thought like a quotation, or an interesting
twist of logic, or a clear call to act on the tips or
know-how you have provided.
Pointers to note
Create an outline for your article before straightway
writing it out. Use one-line sentences to describe
paragraphs, and bullet points to describe what each
paragraph will contain. Map out the structure of your
paragraphs and make sure that each paragraph is unified.
Make use of lists, both bulleted and numbered. This makes
your information easy to absorb, and gives the reader a
mental break from dissecting your paragraphs one after
the other.
Write with a casual, conversational tone, as if you are
talking with a friend rather than a formal tone such as
textbook diction. Readers respond better that way.
Vary the length and structure of your sentences.
Sentences that are of the same length and structure tend
to sound monotone, and will put your readers to sleep.
All borrowed ideas and quotations should be correctly
referenced in your article with listings of the sources.
Use borrowed ideas and quotations sparingly.
You are not finished with your article until you have
polished your language by correcting the...
- Grammar
- Spelling
- Sentences flow
- Incorporating rhythm, emphasis
- Adjusting the formality
- And making other intuitive edits.
Proofread until it reads just how you want it to sound.
Give your language a level-headed tone. Writing an
article can be tedious, so you don't want to waste hours
of work you've put into writing by not proofreading it.
Writing good articles takes lots of practice. Make a
schedule to write at least two articles per week. Read
books and magazines about the process of writing. Jot
down useful tips. Learning to write well takes time and
practice. You will greatly improve your writing skills by
writing and reading.
