Many people
dread writing papers or articles. It is just too much
work and the thing many people feared most is staring
blankly on a piece of paper or computer screen having
nothing to write. Worst still, would anyone read what is
written?
The fact is people do read articles. For the purpose of
articles is to inform. Those articles that are not read
are boring and bland. It does take time and effort to
read an article, so you got to make your articles
interesting and informative.
Writing articles that are interesting and informative
need not be a hair-pulling experience. What you need to
do is to adhere to some guidelines, and practice makes
perfect. Once you get the hang of it, writing articles
can be fun, and productive for your web business.
In this article, I want to offer you the aspiring writer,
11 hot tips to get your articles read...
1.Know the subject that you write about.
Do not be a blind leading the blind. Worst still, if
someone who is an expert on that particular subject reads
your article. Oh, no!!
You must be knowledgeable about a topic to write
effectively about it. Do not just parrot or echo others.
If you know your subject, you are more than halfway
through to completing your article. It is a matter of
arranging your information and making it interesting.
Read widely.
2.Use short paragraphs. It is tiring for
the readers to read long paragraphs. Give them a
breather. You should not have more than five to six
sentences in a paragraph. Point to note is reading
content on the Internet is different from reading a
conventional book. People tend to have shorter attention
spans when it comes to reading content on the Internet.
Leave plenty of white blank spaces. It makes for easy
reading.
Your paragraphs may be a single sentence, or even a
single word!
3.Use short sentences. Concise your
thoughts into short sentences. Avoid long wordy
sentences. Do not beat about the bush or be repetitious.
Your poor readers will have a difficult time
understanding what you are driving at.
If you need more than three or four sentences to
communicate a point, it shows that you have not fully
understood, and thought through what you want to
communicate.
Think what you want to say and concise it to the point!
4.Use numbers or bullets. It is easier
for readers to digest and remember information in point
form. Using bullets or numbers also allow your readers
know where each point starts and ends. Format your
bullets and numbers with indentations so that your
articles will not look like a single block of square
paragraphs. Introduce some flair and pizzazz to your
articles' shape.
Use numbers or bullets to communicate your points.
5.Use Sub-headings to sub-divide your paragraphs.
It gives readers the gist of what would be covered in
your article. Compelling sub-headings will have your
readers riveted to your article.
Sub-headings also break up each point into sections. It
provides a smooth transition from one point to another,
and maintains the flow of your article.
Keyword rich sub-headings will marginally improve your
web page rankings.
6.Craft an attention-grabbing title or header. The
title is the first line people read in your article. You
either make or break here. So, make your article title
sell. Most articles do not get read because the titles
fail to attract the attention of readers and pull them in
to read the rest of the article. You will be surprised
how a change in title can increase readership without any
changes in original content.
Crafting a title that would both attract the search
engines and readers is a science and an art. To attract
the
search engines your article title has to contain keywords
or key phrases. Yet at same time it must be compelling
enough to draw readers.
Words and phrases like secrets, how to, discover, hot
tips, and easy sell fast. Use them in your titles or
headers.
Increase your readership with a well-crafted title or
header.
7.Connect with your targeted readers.
From your opening paragraph, use real life situations
that you readers can identify with. Once you get
connected with your readers, they are as good as sold.
You have to write to communicate with your targeted
audience. Your writing must meet the needs, interest,
expectation and background of your targeted readers.
Choice of words, phrases, scenarios, examples are
important if you want to connect with your targeted
audience.
For example if you are reaching moms, use lots of
homespun examples. If you are reaching experts and
specialists, use technical jargons to get connected.
Know your targeted audience.
8.Use good descriptions and metaphors to stress
your points, but do not over do it. Driving your
examples with graphic metaphors and similes would make it
easy for your readers to understand what you are
communicating.
Make the reading experience of your readers pleasurable
and enjoyable.
9.Utilize specific figures when necessary and not
generalities. Using specific figures and quoting
the reference sources make your article authoritative.
For example:
General: Store-wide discounts.
Specific: 20 percent store-wide discounts.
However, go easy with statistics and figures. You are not
writing a thesis to complete your Masters degree.
10.Edit your articles for readability, flow, and
grammatical, spelling and punctuations errors.
Writing is about communicating your message across to
your readers simply, quickly and effectively. You do not
publish your first draft without a second reading.
Editing is key to a good article. In fact, it is the most
important part in writing. I know, you believe that you
have written a brilliant article and cannot wait to
publish it.
But I want you to realize this, editing will definitely
pay off.
Finally, the last tip...
11.Stick to conventional black and white print.
Well, there is nothing much to look at with conventional
print, but it sure beats red fonts on yellow background.
You may snigger and ask which goon would do such a thing.
Believe you me I have come across web pages that I need
to strain my eyes to read the content.
There you are, 11 hot tips to get your articles read and
have your readers begging for more!
